Day 6 - Tour, Competition, and Awards
Our last full day in Hawaii was a busy one. The day started off with a
trip to Pearl Harbor and a visit to the USS Arizona Memorial. The
students were very respectful and attentive throughout the
presentations and tour. After Pearl Harbor, it was off for a quick
Honolulu city tour by bus, seeing the State Capitol and many other
sights along the way. After returning to the hotel for lunch, it was
back on the bus for a trip to the beautiful campus of Kamehameha
Schools for the indoor Colorguard and Drumline competetions, dinner
and awards ceremony. The Golden Hawks were awarded 9 new Tiki
Trophies which will be displayed proudly in the band room. It was a
perfect ending to a busy but fun trip.

Day 5 - Parade Day
Day 5 was Parade day in Hawaii. With many tourists lining both sides of
the street the length of Kalakaua Avenue, the Golden Hawks Band and
Colorguard was the closing unit in the Salute to Youth Parade. The
weather was perfect and the parade started just as the sun was setting
over Waikiki. The band played Bullets and Bayonets and their new parade
tune, Attitude Dance, which was a crowd favorite. As the Band and
Colorguard marched down the street, the crowd was clapping, cheering
and dancing to the music. Many tourists in the crowd were video taping
and there were a lot of flashes from cameras as our group passed by. It
was a great day and an enthusiastic performance by our Band &
Colorguard. The highlight of the parade had to be passing along Waikiki
Beach as the sun is setting.
Tomorrow we will be getting an early start as we will visit Pearl
Harbor, tour Honolulu and go to the indoor Colorguard and Drumline
competitions.

Day 4 - Concert Day
Day 4 marked the start of the competitions for the band. The Symphonic
Band, Wind Ensemble and Jazz Bands all performed at the Bandstand at
Kapiolani Park. It was a beautiful day for a concert and all of our
groups performed well, as always. There was a breeze in the air which
kept the temperature comfortable, but it did cause a few challenges for
everyone to keep their music on the stands, including Mr. Inzerillo. We
also had a nice surprise today as Mike and Annette Kelley, the same
people who provided our travel T-shirts, were at the concert today to
give commemorative pins to all of the performers from each of the
schools. Thank you to the Kelley's for their continued generosity.
Walking the streets of Waikiki today, there are signs marking the no
parking areas in preparation of tomorrow evening's parade down Kalakaua
Avenue.

Day 3 - Luau Day
Day 3 started off after breakfast with some more free time. Some
students went back to the beach, some made the short walk to the
Honolulu Zoo. Some energetic students and chaperones went to Diamond
Head Crater for a hike up to the summit. It's a challenging walk to the
top, but it is definitely worth the view from above Waikiki Beach.
After
returning to the hotel, everyone got ready to make the bus trip to
Paradise Cove for the Luau. At the Luau, there were several activities
for everyone to try. Spear throwing, outrigger canoe rides and headband
and bracelet weaving. As dinner as prepared, we were entertained with
songs and hula dancing. During dinner, there was more music and
Hawaiian dancing. The highlight of the show was several EDHS students
getting up on the stage and showing off their best dance moves to the
delight of the crowd.
Tuesday is the first music performances as the concert groups and Jazz
bands will perform in Kapiolani Park.

Day 2 - Free Day in Waikiki!
Day 2 started off with a short walk to our breakfast location at
Waikiki Cheeseburger. There was
plenty to eat for everyone and some went back to the buffet for
seconds. Since group 2 arrived in the evening on Saturday,
they were greeted at the restaurant with flower leis. Each person in
Group 2 received their lei and had their photo taken prior to
breakfast.
After breakfast, everyone
enjoyed their free day. Most went to the beach, did some shopping and
enjoyed some fun in the sun. By the end of the day, there were some
tired travelers, but everyone is having a good time. Everyone is
looking forward to some more beach time on Monday and the Luau Monday
night.
